Suk Chan Jung*, Moon Her, Jong Wan Kim, Ji Yeon Kim, In Yeong Hwang, Bok Kyung Ku, Yong Ho Park, Han Sang Yoo. 2010. Bovine Brucellosis in Korea. The Journal of Zoonoses. 1(1):1-15 Abstract Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species. Bovine brucellosis is characterized by abortion, infertility and reduced milk yield. Korean government has been conducting the test and slaughter strategy for the eradication of bovine brucellosis since 1964. The first outbreak of bovine brucellosis in Korea was reported in 1955. Since then, the disease had occurred sporadically until 1983. Notwithstanding the national eradication program, however, it has remained prevalent among Korean native cattle as well as dairy cattle. Especially, the year 2004 found a dramatic increase, which resulted from newly introduced intensive regulations including pre-marketing test certification systems to go so far as to cover Korean native cattle and beef cattle that had been neglected before. The diagnosis of brucellosis is currently based on the serological and microbiological tests. However, the serological methods have been reported to cross-react with antigens other than those from Brucella spp. Therefore, it is needed to develop rapid, sensitive and specific methods for diagnosis of animal brucellosis. Bovine brucellosis continues to be a serious disease for animal and human health in Korea. The programs for the control and prevention of bovine brucellosis have always been based on a test and slaughter policy. Furthermore, well-structured researches are required, and the results of them could be utilized usefully to establish an advanced national eradication program for brucellosis. |
