More than half of stored U.S. beef has been cleared from quarantine inspection, two weeks after the government lifted a ban on American beef imports, officials said.
According to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, a total of 2,925 tons, or 55 percent, of U.S. beef
that has been stored in warehouses since last year was cleared from quarantine inspection as of July 13.
The Seoul government banned imports of American beef after finding spinal bones in the beef in October. The amount of beef that has been waiting for import resumption since last year had been about 5,300 tons.
Of the total, 855 tons of American beef has been handed over to local beef importers so far, quarantine officials said.
American beef is expected to reach the market more quickly than any other as there are hundreds of tons of U.S. meat
waiting to be transported to Korea.
There are about 4,000 tons of U.S. beef stored in containers in Long Beach, California since last year. Sources say that
the beef shipments in California will probably leave the port within the week.
It takes about 15 days to transport U.S. beef shipments to Korea.
