The Korean government is to dispatch a special beef inspection team to local beef processing centers in the U.S. to secure the safety of U.S. beef import to Korea.
Director General Kang Mun-il of the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) held a press conference at the Gwacheon Government Complex on Monday to disclose, “A special beef inspection team will be dispatched to the U.S. to re-inspect the butchery system and the safety of the meat in line with the resumed importation of U.S. beef.”
According to Director General Kang, a total of 31 meat processing plants in the U.S. have been approved for beef export since the execution of the revised quarantine guideline. To examine the safety of meat butchered and processed in these plants, the Korean government is to dispatch the special inspection team -- constituted of four groups, each with nine members led by NVRQS chiefs -- for two weeks from May 12th to 25th.
The inspection team plans to examine the categorized butchery of over 30-month old cattle and the removal process of Specified Risk Material (SRM) parts per processing center. Moreover, the team also intends to see if hygienic conditions in the facilities and the working staffs are managed in accordance to the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and if the processing centers can satisfy Korea’s new quarantine guideline.
If the investigation discovers any flaws, the Korean government is to conduct additional reexaminations; if adequate improvement does not follow, suspension of exports from that particular processing plant can be officially requested to the U.S.
