Poster presentation in the Korean Society of Veterinary Science on April 20, 2007.
Results and conclusion
Results:
The main clinical signs were redness and edematous of the combs and wattles. The common gross lesions were
shown in the spleen, pancreas, and ovary. The spleen was increased in size with multifocal white spots.
The pancreas was necrosis with slightly round form all over the pancreas. The ovary was ruptured, abnormal forms,
and severely reddened. Histopathologic lesions were seen in the comb, trachea, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, spleen,
ovary, and kidney. There were hyperemia and hemorrhage in the vascular lesions and multiple confluent foci of
necrosis with mild to severe inflammatory cellular responses in the various organs. These lesions consisted necrotic
hepatitis, cardiac myocytic necrosis, renal tubule necrosis, splenic lymphocytic necrosis, interstitial pneumonia,
pancreatic acinar epithelial cells necrosis, etc. Immunohistochemically, influenza virus antigens were observed mainly
in the nucleus of parenchymal cells and vascular endothelium in multiple organs. There was a strong association
between the location of viral antigen and histological lesions.
Conclusions:
The immunohistochemical stains were positive strongly in the endothelial cells of vascular system. That may be
explained the acute onset, systemically infection for short period, and high mortality on broiler breeders infected with
HPAI.
