The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said on Friday (Dec. 15) that gene analysis by the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service of two cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 that erupted in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, last month has determined that they are different from the viruses reported in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
The ministry said the virus from Iksan has been determined to belong to the same gene group taken from wild fowl at a Chinghai Lake in China in May last year, noting that it is different from the one that infected humans reported from the three Southeast Asian countries.
It said the virus gene group from Iksan was the same with the one found in Korea in 2003, adding there was no case of human infection at that time.
To precisely determine the possibility of the latest case infecting humans, however, the ministry said, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will ask its U.S. counterpart to make an analysis of it this week.
